Disclaimer
IncomeTaxByState.com is an independent reference site that presents publicly available state-tax data with primary-source citations. Read this page before relying on any figure, bracket, or rule described elsewhere on the site.
Not tax, legal, or financial advice
Nothing on IncomeTaxByState.com constitutes personalised tax advice, legal advice, or financial advice. The site's author and operator (Digital Signet) are not a CPA firm, an Enrolled Agent practice, a tax attorney, or a registered investment advisor. The site presents published rates, brackets and statutory citations as a reference. Every individual's tax situation is different. Before making any filing decision, consult a licensed CPA, Enrolled Agent, or tax attorney who can review your specific facts and circumstances.
Not affiliated with the IRS or any state Department of Revenue
IncomeTaxByState.com is operated by Digital Signet and is not affiliated with the US Internal Revenue Service, the US Department of the Treasury, or any state Department of Revenue, Department of Taxation, Tax Commission, or Comptroller. Where the site refers to IRS publications, state DOR publications, or state statutes, the references are provided for citation and convenience only. We do not represent any government agency. Trademark references identify the publication being cited and do not imply endorsement.
Verify figures against the primary source
State income tax brackets, standard deductions, personal exemptions, and retirement-income rules change annually and sometimes mid-year. The figures on this site are pulled from the source list on the methodology page: 51 state Department of Revenue or Tax Commission publications, IRS Publication 17, the Tax Foundation State Business Tax Climate Index, the Federation of Tax Administrators table, and NCSL State Tax Actions. Verification dates are stamped on every page and on the methodology source ledger. Before acting on any figure, confirm it against the state DOR's own current publication. If a figure on this site disagrees with the state DOR, the state DOR is authoritative.
Calculator outputs are estimates
The effective-rate calculators on this site apply the state's published bracket schedule and the state's standard deduction (single, MFJ, or HoH). They do not capture itemized deductions, state-level credits (earned income credit, child credit, retirement saver's credit), federal-state interactions, residency edge cases, multi-state filing, or self-employment tax. Calculator outputs are estimates that approximate the state income tax liability of a representative single, MFJ, or HoH filer at the input income level; they are not a substitute for filling out the state's actual return.
Multi-state and out-of-state taxpayers
If you live in one state and work in another, or moved during the tax year, or earn income from multiple states, the calculations on this site are insufficient. You may owe tax in more than one state under each state's residency and source-of-income rules. The 16 active reciprocity agreements (see /state-tax-reciprocity-agreements) cover specific bilateral commuter situations only. New York's convenience-of-employer rule per N.Y. Tax Law § 631 can require remote workers of NY employers to pay NY tax even when working from another state. In any multi-state situation, consult a CPA who handles multi-state filings.
Affiliate disclosure
Some pages on this site contain affiliate links to tax-preparation software (TurboTax, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA, Cash App Taxes, TaxSlayer) and related financial services. If you open an account or purchase software through one of these links, we may receive a referral fee at no additional cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not influence the bracket figures, statute citations, or recommendations presented on the site. We do not accept payment to alter our presentation of state DOR data. Affiliate links are disclosed in accordance with FTC 16 CFR § 255.
